The Christmas Advert Battle!

Asking the Questions, Television

We have to continue talking about Christmas adverts…

So you may remember that in my last post I spoke with you about the introduction of the ever-iconic John Lewis Christmas advert, Buster the Boxer. Earlier tonight, the UK was treated again with another fabulous advert. I’ve brought together my favourites of this year.

John Lewis: Buster the Boxer

John Lewis describes this ad as a story of a little girl called Bridget, whose favourite thing to do is jumping.

“When her mum and dad buy her a trampoline for Christmas, they soon discover she isn’t the only one with a passion for jumping.”

Although I didn’t feel John Lewis tugging at my heartstrings, I can see the route they have tried to take this year. It feels more comical and relaxed, whilst still managing to personify animals – something they’ve become very good at in recent years!

M&S: Christmas With Love From Mrs Claus

This one feels like proper traditional Christmas. M&S say that Mrs Claus is “the new Christmas icon”, and I have to agree. Not only do we get a sensational portrayal of Mrs Claus, her husband Santa himself also makes an appearance – anyone would have thought he’s too busy this time of year.

This ad follows the secret life of Mrs Claus as she gets a special request from a young boy called Jake, who just wants to make his sister happy at Christmas.

…And keep an eye out for what book Mrs Claus is reading right now!

This advert got me right in the feels, and a quick scroll through the comments and tweets about this advert suggest that it also had the country weeping too! M&S were bang on the money when they said this was a “modern twist” on Mrs Claus.

Coca-Cola: Holidays Are Coming

Christmas just isn’t happening without this advert! This iconic advert even had a campaign to reinstate it when Coca-Cola decided to stop using it in the early 2000’s, as it’s customers saying that seeing this advert signified the very start of Christmas for them.

Of course, Coca-Cola decided to bring it back and has used it as part of their Christmas campaign every year, alongside a yearly produced campaign. This part of their campaign shows the iconic Coca-Cola red trucks making their way through a village which is preparing for the festive season. Everything these trucks pass lights up along the way – it’s truly magical!

You literally cannot deny that the Holidays are Coming campaign makes you feel Christmassy and nostalgic. I think it’s safe to say that Coca-Cola has definitely had its money’s worth from this campaign.

Sainsbury’s: The Greatest Gift

This advert premiered on ITV earlier tonight! Yes, we have premieres for our Christmas adverts in the UK…

This is a fantasically produced stop motion advert that follows the life of Dave, who is “a hard-working and devoted dad, who realises that he greatest gift he can give people this Christmas is his time.”

This advert took a whole three and a half minute commercial break in ITV’s I’m A Celebrity…Get Me Out Of Here! Vocals were provided by James Corden.

I personally feel that this hands down wins best advert this Christmas! It’s such an up-beat, feel good campaign that makes light of the strains that come along in the Christmas season! Best ad this year!

But what about you?! Why not have your say by voting below on what your favourite advert was. Or was there something I’ve missed? Let me know in the comments below!

I hope that’s made you feel all festive!
